A LEGACY THAT SHAPED INDIAN SQUASH
THE GOLDEN ERA OF INDIAN SQUASH
Few athletes have shaped the history of Indian squash as profoundly as Meherwan Rusi Daruvala. Born on 13 January 1963, he emerged during the “Golden Era” for the sport in India and went on to establish himself as one of the country’s most accomplished and respected squash players.
Meherwan began playing squash in 1978 and quickly distinguished himself through his exceptional skill, determination, and competitive spirit. His breakthrough came in 1982 when he was crowned Junior National Champion, marking the arrival of a remarkable new talent on the Indian squash circuit.
Behind Meherwan’s remarkable rise stood the unwavering guidance of his father, Rusi J. Daruvala, a legendary figure in Indian motorsport. Rusi was celebrated for his success on the iconic Norton Manx and was widely admired for his discipline, courage, and passion for competition. Drawing on his own experience as a champion, he became Meherwan’s first mentor and coach, instilling in him the values of hard work, resilience, discipline, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. His influence played a pivotal role in shaping the champion who would go on to dominate Indian squash.
In 1983, Meherwan captured his first National title by defeating Major Raj Manchanda in the semi-finals and Ananth Nayak in the final, beginning one of the most dominant periods in Indian squash history. Between 1983 and 1987, he achieved the extraordinary feat of winning five consecutive National Championships, a testament to his consistency, discipline, and excellence at the highest level of competition.
His success extended beyond national borders. Representing India with distinction, Meherwan R. Daruvala delivered one of the most memorable performances of his career at the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Pakistan, where he defeated Pakistan No. 1 Ehsanullah Khan in a thrilling encounter to secure the Silver Medal in the Men’s Individual event.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements and contribution to Indian sport, he was honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award, one of the nation’s highest sporting accolades. The award cemented his place among the elite athletes of his generation and acknowledged his role in inspiring future generations of Indian squash players.
Today, Meherwan Daruvala continues to embody the values that defined his sporting career—commitment, excellence, perseverance, and leadership. Beyond the squash court, he serves as the Managing Director of Armacoat Products Private Limited, a leading manufacturer of specialised high-performance industrial coatings for onshore and offshore industries. Under his leadership, the company continues to uphold the same standards of quality, innovation, and integrity that have defined his lifelong pursuit of excellence.
